Racing Bike or Hybrid Bike?

Okay so I can’t afford a car so I want to buy a really decent bike to commute to and from work which is around 7 miles away but I haven’t ridden a bike in 10 years so I’m completely out of the loop so can anyone who has extensive knowledge about bikes help me? Oh and about price I am looking for something within the $750 to $850 range (I want this bike to last a while) oh and can anyone tell me what frame size I would need? I’m a little over 5′ 9” and I have a 33inch inseam. I also want a really fast bike (I’m a bit of a speed demon) but I can’t decide between a racing bike or a hybrid so if anyone has some suggestions they would be much appreciated. I also don’t know if this matters but my fitness level is pretty good I can run 9 miles pretty easily.

I don’t think you would be satisfied with anything but a road bike. You get to push the limits of your endurance and enjoy the speed at the same time, Look for an entry level bike at the local bike shop or find a good used one with mid or upper level components for the same price. Check out the entry level bikes first and find out what size you need. Fit is very important on a road bike. You should fit a 54-56 cm frame depending on the manufacturer.

Don’t take the advice of any moron here; go to a bike shop and get correctly fitted. That’s the only way to do it. You’ll be sorry if you don’t.

Unless you want to ‘race’ the hybrid would be a better choice for the following reason? The hybrid has upright sitting position like a mtn bike, it has road type gearing, wider tires. This will provide you with a light, fast, comfortable, and stable bike on any road type. Also, you can add a rear bike rack with a basket so you can carry books, lunch, a change of clothes, or even a large bag of groceries.

For speed the road back will be superior, but it is like a sports car. It will be much more responsive with a much more rigid ride.

I am a roadie…. if I were riding a bike daily to work, I would choose to add a hybrid to my ‘stable’ just for that purpose!

    Road bike it is.
All you need to do is check out a local bike shop and see what they have in store for you. $750-$850 is well enough to get yourself a decent road bike.
You may run 9miles easily but cycling muscles are completely different than running muscles. You’d be surprised how much different it is. But as far as stamina, your running fitness does help.

Frame size…consult your LBS (local bike shop). That even varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example: One manufacturer’s 19″ frame hybrid may work fine, while in another you may need a smaller/bigger size.

Road bike vs. Hybrid. How much do you feel the ‘need for speed’? A Hybrid would definitely be more comfortable – by a long shot. If it means anything…I don’t have a car either. I added a rear rack & fold out grocery baskets to mine. It’s so versatile. But…are you more of a Corvette or a Cadillac? Lastly, my 2008 Raleigh Hybrid didn’t come anywhere close to $750. It now has over 1,000 trouble free miles on it. Link below…
