Former U.S. Olympian and Cancer Survivor to Ride 2,241-Mile Tour de France Route for Charity

Marblehead, MA (PRWEB) May 25, 2005

Destination Cycling today announced that former U.S. Olympian and cancer survivor, Kevin Mahaney, will ride all 2,241 miles of the 2005 Tour de France route this July to raise money for the Tyler Hamilton Foundation (THF) and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). As organizers of the Tour de France Challenge 2005 (TDFC), Destination Cycling will ensure that the 43-year old Mahaney has the necessary support to complete what many people deem the most grueling bike race in the world.

“Life is not a spectator sport,” says Kevin Mahaney, after watching the 2002 Tour de France with his three sons and being inspired by the performances of both Tyler Hamilton and Lance Armstrong. Having a close family friend with multiple sclerosis and overcoming a personal battle with cancer in 1993, Kevin Mahaney has chosen THF (multiple sclerosis) and LAF (cancer survivorship) as the TDFC beneficiaries. “Tyler and Lance inspire me and like them, I am not complacent with the status quo. I am dreaming of something impossible that hopefully will encourage others to do the same.”

Kevin Mahaney, 43, is no stranger to athletic challenge. In 1992, he won an Olympic Silver Medal in sailing and the prestigious title of Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. In 1995, he founded and skippered the America’s Cup defense team “Young America.” In 2002, Kevin set a three-year plan to get into cycling shape, bought a bike and started training. In 2005, Kevin approached Destination Cycling to transform his dream into a reality with travel, team and technical support.

“Destination Cycling is in the business of making people’s dream vacations possible, no matter how big that dream might be,” said Joe Tonon, Destination Cycling’s Founder and Director. “It’s a major feat to ride 2,241 miles in a year, so to do it in one month, just days before the professional racers pedal through, is extraordinary. The logistics of this ride are daunting as well, but the Destination Cycling team is up for the challenge.”

Destination Cycling has organized the staff and logistics for Kevin’s ride as a true professional cycling team. Kevin will be supported by a team of eight other riders and a staff including one coach, one mechanic, and three trainers. The team will follow the same exact route as the 2005 Tour de France, covering all 21 stages and a total distance of 2,241 miles (3,606 kilometers). During July, the team will ride the route the day before the professional peloton.

In addition to Destination Cycling, event sponsors include The Olympia Companies, Clif Bar, Kryptonite, Hutchinson Tires, Pedro’s, Smith Optics, and Zipp Wheels.

Besides underwriting all trip expenses, Kevin personally has donated to the TDFC, $ 1 per kilometer cycled. Destination Cycling is matching Kevin’s donation. Net proceeds raised from the Tour de France Challenge 2005 will be contributed to the Tyler Hamilton Foundation and Lance Armstrong Foundation. Individual supporters are encouraged to donate to the Tour de France Challenge online at http://www.active.com/donate/tdfchallenge2005.

Asked about why he chose Destination Cycling to lead his epic ride, Kevin explains, “Every other company I approached was afraid to commit to the challenges involved in running such a tour. I chose Destination Cycling because of its knowledge, contacts, and capabilities with organizing European performance cycling tours. Destination Cycling cared about my goals and objectives.”

Explore the Traveler’s ‘Tour de France’ in Paris with Viator.com

The Moulin Rouge, Paris

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 29, 2009

As the Tour de France has concluded along the Champs-Elysees, Viator.com is exploring the beautiful city of Paris as its summer series, Viva La Viator, continues. As “viator” is Latin for “traveler,” Viator.com, the leading resource for researching and booking more than 5,500 trip activities and experiences in 75 countries at the best prices, is encouraging everyone taking a trip this summer to dig deep, like the cyclists climbing the Alps, to truly experience all their destination has to offer.

Viva Paris

Paris, the capital city of France located on the lovely river Seine, is one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations. From icons like the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysees; to the romance of a river cruise along the Seine; to the thrills of the cabaret at the Moulin Rouge – Paris is a destination well-adored by millions of visitors and well-explored by true travelers who plan and book their activities in advance.

First Time Visitors – There are a number ways a first-time visitor to Paris can experience a great deal in a relatively small amount of time. A Viator top-seller, the Eiffel Tower Dinner, Paris Moulin Rouge Show and Seine River Cruise combines three Parisian iconic experiences into one evening. The Paris Pass, with the choice of two, four or six days provides free public transport plus skip the line and fast track entry to many of the featured sites and attractions which include the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Pantheon and Musee d’Orsay. Travelers should also consider the Paris Walking Tour: Classic Paris, the Heart of Paris Bike Tour and the Paris City Hop-on Hop-off Tour as a good start.

Pleasures of the French Palate – Visitors to Paris can treat themselves to some of the finest food and wine available with expert guides leading the way. The Paris Chocolate and Pastry Food Tour with local “foodie” guide visits at least three pastry shops, a bakery and three chocolate shops. The Paris Food Walking Tour: Gourmet French Food includes visits to a bakery, pastry shop, local caterer, wine shop and cheese shop while the Pastry and Dessert Course in Montmartre features recipes taught by a professional French chef. The French Wine Tasting in Paris led by a professional sommelier, sips a variety of wines from Alsace to Bordeaux, from Burgundy to Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The Champagne Tasting Cruise in Paris combines the beauty of the Seine river with the pleasure of tasting three Champagnes.

Only in Paris – Paris has its icons, but it also has more intimate and unique aspects to explore. The Perfume Workshop in Paris studies its history and current trends with a top Paris “nose,” then travelers can create their own exclusive scent to take home. Paris is synonymous with style, and the Teen Shopping and Fashion Accessories Tour in Paris turns the trends to the teens focusing on the hippest and funkiest French brands. And, a quintessential symbol of the Parisian lifestyle is experienced first-hand during the Viator Exclusive: Private Paris Tour by Citroen 2CV. Thanks to the convertible soft top roof of this emblematic car and expert chauffeur and guide, this largely customizable private tour offers a magnificent panoramic and insider’s view of the city. Other 2CV excursions include Essential Paris and Secret Paris.

Culture and History – A trip to Paris must include the Louvre and the Skip the Line: Paris Louvre Museum Guided Tour offers a prioritized tour featuring the Venus de Milo, the Victory of Samothrace and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Monet’s Garden at Giverny and American Art Museum Afternoon Tour by Minivan visits the beautiful home and garden that inspired the master of Impressionism, Claude Monet. A trip to Versailles in the summer (until Oct. 26) like the Versailles Guided Tour with Optional Fountain Show features the option of enjoying a magnificent fountain display revealing the skill and artistry of three centuries of French garden design and engineering. The Loire Valley Castles Day Trip: Chambord, Cheverny and Chenonceau visits the three most famous chateaux of the Loire Valley: Chenonceau Castle, Chateau de Cheverny and Chateau de Chambord. Spend a special day traveling to Normandy during the D-Day Tour: Normandy Battlefields and Landing Beaches by Minivan and visit the American Cemetery in Coleville, Arromanches and the beaches of Omaha and Juno.

Traveler of the Week

As part of the Viva La Viator summer series a “Traveler of the Week” will be chosen from among Viator customers who have submitted traveler reviews and photos representing each destination or theme. Visit the Viator Travel Blog for more information. For details on these Parisian experiences or any of Viator’s more than 5,500 tours and activities around the world including special summertime deals and discounts, visit Viator.com.

Saxo Bank Celebrates Success of its Sponsorship During Tour de France

Canary Wharf, London (PRWEB) August 1, 2010

With Andy Schleck as team leader, the Saxo Bank team won four stages, the youth competition and finished in second place overall. Saxo Bank remained front and centre as the cycling drama unfolded, from Fabian Cancellara’s time trial win in the Rotterdam prologue and Andy Schleck’s seventeenth stage victory in the Pyrenees Mountains to the finale on Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

Bringing Saxo Bank fans together to support the team during this year’s Tour de France was an important goal for Saxo Bank in its third season as sponsor of the team. The online bank organised on-site events that let fans and clients experience the race closer than ever before. In Rotterdam, Bruxelles, Avoriaz and Paris, hundreds of guests were given a chance to watch the race as VIPs, meet the riders for autographs and photos and see the mechanics working on the bikes.

Saxo Bank also provided exclusive online coverage on its website, Saxobanktakingthelead.com, including incredible behind-the-scenes looks at Team Saxo Bank’s tactics, training and, of course, the bikes. In addition to the website, Saxo Bank knit the community of cycling enthusiasts and Saxo Bank fans together with real-time race updates and the latest Tour de France developments directly on their computer or mobile phones via Twitter and other social media activities.

Saxo Bank’s Tour de France facts and figures:

Searches for the Saxo Bank brand on Google doubled over the course of the Tour.
The saxobanktakingthelead.com website had an increase of 459.79% growth in absolute Unique Visitors during the Tour.
The Saxobank Twitter (http://twitter.com/saxobank ) feed received a record 4,678 followers.

Lars Seier Christensen, co-founder and co-CEO of Saxo Bank, who followed Team Saxo Bank during most of the Tour, said that the sponsorship has not only proven a great branding opportunity for the Bank but also increased Saxo Bank’s recognition around the world.

Spanning three weeks and 3,642 kilometers, the 2010 Tour de France was one of the toughest and most demanding editions of the race in recent years. Following their performance at this year’s Tour de France, Team Saxo Bank is now ranked as the number two cycling team in the world.

Destination Cycling’s Tour de France Challenge Ride Featured in Outside Magazine’s 2006 Adventure Life List

Marblehead, MA (PRWEB) January 12, 2006

Destination Cycling’s Tour de France Challenge (TDFC) ride is currently featured in Outside Magazine’s 2006 Adventure Life List. “The Tour de France Challenge represents the ultimate way to “live large” and experience the Tour de France,” said Joe Tonon, Destination Cycling’s Co-Founder. “We are honored to be recognized by Outside Magazine.”

As Kevin Mahaney, last year’s TDFC team captain, said upon his arrival in Paris, “You cannot beat the Tour, you can only try to survive it.” Kevin, a former U.S. Olympian and cancer survivor, rode all 21 stages and 3,608 kilometers of the 2005 Tour de France route and raised over $ 60,000 for the Tyler Hamilton and Lance Armstrong Foundations. Destination Cycling organized the staff and logistics for Kevin’s ride as a true professional cycling team.

The logistics and planning are underway for the 2006 Tour de France Challenge. Destination Cycling is offering an exclusive event catering to the dreams of nine riders, just like a pro team. The price for this trip is $ 30,000 per rider and covers everything a pro rider would wish for and more over the 26-day trip: hotels, meals, transportation, full team kit (biking and casual apparel), bike, accessories, plus all mechanical, massage, and medical support. Kevin Mahaney is joining the ride again in 2006 as one of the nine riders.

“What we’re doing is modeling what the pro teams do,” said Joe Tonon. Destination Cycling provides participants with the necessary travel, team, and technical support to complete the entire route. The team rides the route the day before the professional peloton.

Asked about why he chose Destination Cycling to lead his epic ride, Kevin Mahaney explains, “Every other company I approached was afraid to commit to the challenges involved in running such a tour. I chose Destination Cycling because of its knowledge, contacts, and capabilities with organizing European performance cycling tours. Destination Cycling cared about my goals and objectives.”

As the capital of France, Paris is a large city; it sits on the banks of the river Seine and is also known as the City of Lights. Paris short stays of a few days, often over a long weekend are the normal way to see it; with a great deal to see and do that really a week is needed.

Visitors flock to see its many wonderful buildings; including famous sights like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe to name just two internationally famous landmarks. Visitors to Paris as well as its citizens can travel around Paris easily; the Metro underground train network will probably be the main method as it runs regularly and reaches every part of the city.

You can’t miss the Eiffel Tower, mainly because it’s over three hundred meters high; it can be seen throughout most locations around the city. Illuminated at night it dominates the city’s skyline; taking a tour at the same time will teach you much more about this remarkable structure.

If you plan on spending some of your traveler’s checks in Paris, then a trip down the Champs Elysees is an essential part of a trip; with shops, cafes, and restaurants littered along the wide pavements, it is a “must see” for every visitor. When you visit this region of the city you will see it is a much more select area; it is also where most of the five star hotels are situated but thankfully hotels tend to be cheaper once you move away from the city center.

If you are an art lover you will enjoy the Louvre, a truly amazing museum; with over 300,000 wonderful artistic works, you simply cannot see all of it in one day. If you are an art lover then you could spend your whole short stay in Paris inside; with the likes of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to view in addition to some of the finest collections of art in the world. Paris has always been a magnetic destination for artists; chances are that you will have the opportunity to see a number of famous paintings whilst you’re visiting.

The Arc de Triomphe another famous landmark was built by Napoleon in 1806; the names of his generals engraved upon it to honor them and his troops. A little known fact is that there’s a viewing observatory built into the building allowing the whole area to be viewed; it is located in Place Charles de Gaulle where twelve of the city’s main avenues start, including Avenue de Champs Elysees.

You will not be at a loss for places to visit whilst in the city; and whilst there are many more worthy examples, those listed here should not be missed. A Paris Short stay vacation should only ever be considered a sample of what the city can offer; that would require a longer visit as you probably won’t have time to visit the Gothic churches and castles in only a few days.

Travel Tips To European Countries: France

Travel Tips To European Countries: France

About the city

The crowd is attracted to sparkling ski slopes of the Alps, sunlit vineyards and sun-baked beaches of this beautiful country. France is a country which draws more tourists than any other country. It is easy to see why this is the case given France’s great reputation for fine wines, good food, high fashion and relaxed lifestyle. But while France is undoubtedly a place to eat and drink till your heart is content, there’s much more to this fascinating country than only cutting-edge cuisines. Spring is the best time to be here, and those interested in winter sports can drop at the Alps and Pyrenees with some polar gear. The summers are very hot and winters are moderate. An all-weather coat and pair of comfortable shoes are a must. Women, especially, should carry cocktail dresses as some of the restaurants ask for it. When visiting any religious site, refrain from wearing sleeveless shirt and shorts, as they are disliked at such places.

Culture

English is widely spoken here, although French is the official language. Handshaking is
customary greeting and women should be kissed on both cheeks and should be addressed
as Monsieur or Madame. French people are popularly known for their like for stylish sportswear
and of course perfumes. Nudism is allowed on some beaches only. Social functions, fine
restaurants, and clubs call for more formal dressing. When at a formal dinner, wait till the host
gestures to start the dinner. Smoking is banned in public places.

Site Seeing

Paris, the city of love, is a massive city with many attractions in reachable distance thanks to the
highly efficient public transport system. It boasts of more than 80 museums and 200 arts
galleries. A trip to Disney land and the magnificent Eiffel tower will make the trip worthwhile.

The Playful Adventure Of Castle Hopping In The Enchanting Loire Valley In France

The Playful Adventure Of Castle Hopping In The Enchanting Loire Valley In France

France’s Loire Valley has the grandest selection of 15th and sixteenth century castles. With fifty to sixty “must see” castles scattered on both sides of a 100-mile sweep of the Loire River, the first-time visitor can feel overwhelmed. Details of 5 of the best-known castles are below.

Chateau Chambord

King Francois I was not content with just the castles at Chenonceau and Amboise. He acquired over 10,000 acres of hunting land and decided to construct the world’s most magnificent “hunting lodge”. Chambord was built over many decades by Francois and his successors, Henri II and Charles IX in the sixteenth century.

Fully restored now, Chambord stands as the most extravagant of all the Loire chateaux – 500 feet wide with 440 rooms and 365 fireplaces. The central grand staircase was supposedly designed by the Italian great, Leonardo da Vinci. It has double spirals which enable two parties of people to climb and descend simultaneously without meeting. Chambord will reward any visit with its grandeur and extravagance.

Chateau Chenonceau

Chenonceau Chateau amazes you with its two-story, 260-foot Great Gallery arching over the River Cher. Originally “acquired” by King Francois I, it then passed to his successor, Henri II, who gifted it in 1547 to his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Diane expanded the chateau and built a bridge over the river.

When Henri II died, his wife, Catherine de Medici, took revenge on her rival by forcing Diane to exchange Chateau Chenonceau for nearby Chateau Chaumont. Catherine then commissioned the construction of the bridge gallery. Unbelievably extravagant galas were held here until Catherine’s son, Henry III, was murdered. His wife, Louise de Savoie, placed the castle in mourning, furnishing it entirely in black and white.

History leaps out as you tour the rooms and the gardens. In world war I the Great Gallery was converted to a hospital. In world war II the chateau marked the boundary between Nazi-occupied and free France and became the site of prisoner exchanges. Today the chateau and grounds are maintained at their height as if they were at under Catherine de Medici.

Chateau Chaumont-sur-Loire

Built in the 15th century by Lord Amboise on the site of a 10th century feudal fortress, Chaumont commands incredible views of the Loire Valley. It was later the home of both Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici of Castle Chenonceau fame. Enjoy this chateau for its fortress feeling, drawbridge, furnishings, tapestry, and incredible vistas.

Chateau Amboise

Amboise’s narrowed cobbled streets wind at the base of the large. Although only 25% of the original chateau survives, the fortress walls with flying banners look down on the village and neighboring river. It was here that King Francois I hit his head on a low arch, fatally wounding him.

Chateau Clos Luce

Not more than a half mile from Amboise is Chateau Le Clos Luce, a chateau built and designed by Leonardo da Vinci. He lived the last three years of his life here under Francois I’s sponsorship. The rooms are filled with 40 models of Leonardo’s inventions so you can marvel at his foresight and impressive mental powers 500 years earlier.

Whilst chateau hopping remember to take the time to happen upon some local wine cellars, for “degustation” or tasting Take the time to relax and enjoy your holiday.

How to Visit France

How to Visit France

1.) The Louvre

First stop is almost always the most famous art museum in the history of France and probably the world, The Louvre. It houses some great artistic talents including the famously infamous Leonardo da Vinci. His Mona Lisa is still the top attraction, and that secretive, knowing smile of hers is always a must-see.

2.) The Eiffel Tower

Next on the list is, of course, the Eiffel Tower. It was once ridiculed by ancient artists as a monstrosity but is now regarded as one of Paris, France’s best works of art. Inside, you can get souvenirs, have your postcards stamped with the Eiffel Tower insignia and dine in their restaurants.

3.) French Riviera

Within its borders, you will find the famous tourist destinations Nice, Cannes and St. Tropez. Its beaches are so breathtaking and magnificent, and they are perfect for a romantic rendezvous. The scene also becomes a little wilder once the parties get rolling in the evenings.

4.) The Cathedral of Notre Dame

Victor Hugo’s famous book has this as the backdrop of his entire story where we all learned to love the brave and endearing hunchback. Famous for its stone architecture complete with towering religious icons, gothic design capturing different faces of gargoyles, the Notre Dame Cathedral shouldn’t be missed. As such, this place should always be in the itinerary of anyone visiting France.

5.) Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe

This was built in honor of the French military who fought alongside Napoleon, and this is one of France’s famous historic landmarks. Some say that if you don’t know your way around Paris, you could end up going around in circles in the Arc de Triomphe and never get out. They also say that you could get so confused which way to go because traffic is going around the arc.

6.) Disneyland

Paris, too, has a Disneyland of its own. It has the trademark rides, parades, fireworks display, and attractions all Disneyland theme parks are famous for. But, of course, there is still something that is uniquely France’s alone.

7.) Historic Normandy

Perhaps the most famous place in France when it comes to history is Normandy. Normandy has seen too many wars and fought too many battles for France. The most famous event here is the burning of Joan of Arc in 1431.

8.) Lourdes

The apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary during the 19th century to Bernadette Soubirous have made this place a popular destination for pilgrims and devotees of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As such, this place has also become a tourist destination. If you are a devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary, then this place is for you.

9.) Musee d’Orsay

This magnificent museum of art found inside a railway station is a testimony of how much the French love and revere art. Because of this, they will impart this love to anyone and everyone who is interested. So, if you are an art lover, then head on to Musee d’Orsay.

10.) Vineyards

France is famous for its wine tours. You can take your pick from Alsace to Rhone Valley on which vineyards to visit where you can do a little wine tasting or perhaps even jump in and join grape harvesting. Truly a uniquely French experience!
