what is the difference between a large or small sprocket one a bmx bike?

im about to buy a bmx bike and i dont really know much. im thinking that a small sprocket lets you go fast but is harder to pedal and a large one is the opposite. i dont really know. also, what do you think is a good bmx for me?

A few teeth can make a difference in your top end speed

Yet,to think that just the rear is the way to go is not always the wisest choice. Both the front and the rear can be changed .
You will be desiring a ratio that is good for you.At times a front ring change can be better than a rear as the ratio of the gear makes you more comfortable with what you are doing.
Try riding some bikes to discover the changes and to learn what you like and do not like.

If you are just wanting the bmx for certain areas of riding then you should attempt to attain the best ratio for yourself. A good crank length, freewheel and front chain ring size will create a perfect ratio for you.
I suggest trying one tooth at a time for your rear ring change. Two teeth for a front.
As for the crank, then it is always about clearance .
A longer crank will always deliver more power with more ease but can get in the way when cornering or doing just about anything fun. This is why your desired ratio should be thought about. With a good ratio for you ,you can use the shorter crank to achieve your goals.

As for the good bmx for you,get one that has the right frame size ,stem and bar for you.A comfy seat helps too, trust me.

I hope my ramblings can assist you in some way
