What is too much to pay for a mountain bike?

I’m in the market for a new mountain bike and see good ones starting at $1000. However, I found a “boutique” mountain bike by a company called Intense and the bike was much nicer than the others. However, it was $3600. Am I nuts to spend that much for a bicycle?

Yep. I wouldn’t spend more than $200-250. There’s decent ones at that price and if you find you really like mountain biking then by all means, spend more. You won’t waste your money that way….

Depends on how much you ride. I have over 4,000 miles on my bike. If you ride a lot, and have a lot of money, I guess you could justify a $3,600.00 bike.

That depends on you. If you really like mountain biking and you have the money it’s OK to buy it but if you’ve just started mountain biking i wouldn’t recommend you to buy a such a expensive bike.
My favourite bike brand is Specialized, they make very good mountainbikes but they are also expensive.

Above that $1000 price, you start to run into diminishing returns for your money. Up to that point, adding a few hundred dollars gives you a much nicer bike, after that the improvements cost more. Doubling the price you pay won’t give you twice as nice a bike as it would in the lower ranges. To answer the question ” am I nuts?”, you have to ask yourself if you feel that you are getting your money’s worth. For someone who really enjoys, can appreciate, and will get enough use out of their bike, the price is fair. If the bike is going to sit in your house most of the time, paying less would be the way to go.

In that price range you get what you pay for and Intense is certainly getting alot! If you buy that and don’t use it then NO don’t get it. If the bike suits your ridding style and you think you will use it then yes, if you have the money and can afford it then go for it but don’t let it sit around collecting dust….then it will be useless to you and you will have a hard time getting even close to what you paid originally the longer it sits. Parts on the higher end bikes will also cost you to repair over the lower entry level bikes too. So keep in mind the added costs for this over the long term and weather or not you can afford it?!

None of these people know anything about mountain bikes. The higher the price, the better the quality. That’s how it rolls in mountian biking. It all depends on what you are riding on, though. If you are doing downhill and dirt jumping, pay more. If you are doing XC, pay even more. If you are riding around the city, don’t pay much money. Any mountain bike under 400 dollars is worthless. Bikes do go up to 15,000 dollars. www.scottusa.com, www.santacruzbicycles.com
