What type of mountain bike should i buy?

Im looking at buying a mountain bike to just ride around town and occasionally maybe go trailing with it. I dont want to spend more than like $400 b/c it will be rode in town more than on trails. Any suggestions of makes that i should buy or specific feature to keep in mind when buying a bike b/c i dont know much about what to look for in a bike and need help in that area.

Thanks

If you re going to spend more time in town on your bike you may want to consider a cross baike. There are so many factors to consider when purchasing a bike but if you intend to spend a considerable amount of time on it…Aside from the many variables in equipment, you want to be comfortable on it. Saddles can always be switched out. THere is a definite advantage to having a shock but you may just as comfortable ona hard tail bike without them. It really is directly related to what you want to to with the bike. If it is merely transportation and light riding you can go very basic. I would spend some time at a bike shop and having the staff there fit you to a bike. THe are extremely informadible and most allow you to take the bike for a short ride. Bikes are a lot like a good pair of hiking boots, they might feel great on the showroom floor but you rally need to get out there and use them to find out if they suit your purpose. I would think that after you spent some time familiarizing yourself at a few good bike shops, for 400 you could get a great used bike in the paper after you know what you want.
